About the Job

Under close supervision of the Housing Custodial Supervisor the Housing Custodian performs a wide variety of cleaning tasks and is responsible for minor maintenance and storage of equipment. Assists with emergency cleanup projects, maintains closet inventory of equipment and supplies, and maintains work assignments at campus standards. Responsible for cleanliness and security of assigned areas. Work effectively in a team environment; receive and follow instructions from supervisor. Accomplish work within deadlines; may handle more than one project at a time. The candidate is required to comply with the Facilities Management safety program. Ability to communicate in English both orally and writing. Able to read and comprehend English due to safety reasons. Understand and apply both UC and Departmental policies and procedures. Exercise sound judgment in solving problems.

Shifts for these positions may include mornings and nights, which can also include working on weekends/holidays.


Qualifications

At least 1-2 years of demonstrated experience in all aspects of housekeeping/custodial maintenance.
Ability to interact effectively with peers and other staff. Skill in reading and writing standard English.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, peers, employees, supervisor, and department/UC staff in a courteous and professional manner.
Ability to work in the following environmental conditions when covering areas: Outside - when dumping trash; wet - when servicing restroom facilities; fumes - from cleaning solutions/cleaners; odors - from trash receptacles and contents, and dust. Physical ability to stand, walk, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel, and reach when performing a wide range of custodial/housekeeping duties. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Must have valid Class C California Driver's License. Position is subject to the California DMV's "Pull Notice System" and offer of employment is contingent upon a satisfactory driving record.
Employment contingent upon pre-employment physical, including drug/alcohol testing, and background investigation.

Required to wear UC Merced issued uniform and work weekends, evenings, and occasional holidays. Other performance standards include:
Maintains an acceptable attendance record, punctual and meets deadlines. This includes proper clocking in and out procedures.
Maintains a functional awareness of the typical hazards that may be encountered at UC Merced such as bio-hazards, radiation, chemicals, etc. Follow established procedures for dealing with such potential hazards.
Promptly reports accidents on the job, preparing and submitting accident reports.
Knowledge of correct chemical use and mixture.
Knowledge of general custodial duties.
Ability to operate vacuums, floor scrubbers, polishers and carpet steam extractors.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English for safety reasons. Read and comprehend written and verbal.
Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to frequently changing priorities.
Ability to determine when repairs are necessary.
Ability to follow through and carry out assignments.
Problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
Always knock and announce yourself before entering a resident's space.
Skill to work both autonomously and in a team environment.
