The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS) is the shared services organization for a highly regarded cluster of seven independent colleges known as The Claremont Colleges located in Southern California. Today, TCCS is a nationally recognized educational model for academic support, student support and institutional support services to meet the needs of 6,300 students and 2,300 faculty and staff. Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean of Students at Chicano Latino Student Affairs (CLSA) serves as a visionary leader and strategist in promoting Chicanx Latinx issues and multicultural concerns, engaging the students in substantive discourse, responding to challenging student and community needs, and affirming and supporting the identities of Chicanx Latinx communities. The Dean develops and advances policies, practices, and programs that place Latinx student engagement and success at the center of the educational mission; works primarily with individual students and affinity groups, but also collaborates with senior administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, and other constituencies to infuse diversity and multicultural efforts in all aspects of student life and development. The Dean maintains a visible presence on campus, engaging students in spaces where they find community at the Claremont Colleges.
The position oversees the Assistant/Associate Dean of Students and the Administrative Assistant and Events Coordinator at CLSA. The Dean of Students is a member of the TCCS Directors senior leadership team, Cultural Spiritual group, and works collaboratively with all of the Dean of Student offices on the campuses. The Dean works with the Associate/Assistant Dean to design and implement a comprehensive assessment program. The position is responsible for overseeing the budget and the professional staff of CLSA
Essential Functions: The incumbent performs these essential duties and responsibilities.
Required Knowledge and Critical Skills: This position must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge, skills and abilities not listed below:
1. Will possess a Master's degree and 8-10 years of professional experience, or a combination of education and experience in advancing positions within a higher education setting, with a focus on student development and best practices.
2. Critical understanding of intersectionality of students.
3. Critical understanding of socio economic, regional, cultural, gender and sexual diversity of Latinx students
4. Demonstrate an understanding of how to meet the academic, cultural and social needs of Latinx students in a residential selective liberal arts college setting.
5. The ability to advise and provide direction to students who are pursuing graduate and professional degrees.
6. The ability to create strategic partnerships with industry and non-profit organizations as means to provide internships and career opportunities for students.
7. Bilingual English and Spanish proficiency preferred
8. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required
Preferred Qualifications: The following qualifications are preferred:
1. Terminal degree in a relevant discipline (PhD, EdD or JD) preferred.
2. Proven ability to collaborate with multiple constituencies to develop high-impact programs.
3. Demonstrate a commitment and capacity to serve as a caring advisor and mentor for Chicanx Latinx students.
4. Experience in dealing with student crisis, such as but not limited to: mental health, academic, personal conduct, and student activism.
5. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity and complexity of the Chicanx Latinx experience in higher education.
7. Demonstrated supervisory and budget management experience.
8. Ability to develop assessment tools to promote program development and improvement.
Required Hours: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the organization or business unit.
