Associate General Counsel - California

About the Opportunity

The Office of the General Counsel at Northeastern University seeks a full-time attorney to provide support for the university and its California campuses in numerous and varied legal matters. Subject-matter responsibilities will be broad and general in nature and may depend on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. Areas in which the successful candidate is expected to practice include faculty affairs, student affairs and student experience, employment, labor, student discipline, academic appeals, Title IX, business and regulatory matters. Additional areas may include law research, gifts/donations, and policy design and implementation, The attorney will perform activities related to all aspects of litigation in state and federal court as well as administrative agencies. The attorney will work closely with and accept direction from the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel and will successfully collaborate with the Assistant General Counsel located at the Oakland campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have 5 or more years of progressively sophisticated experience and responsibility in all facets of general litigation, employment, student affairs, non-profit law, higher education, and/or aligned areas of law.
  • A J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in California and a member of the Bar in good standing. Admission to practice law in other west coast states is a plus.
  • At least 5 or more years of progressively sophisticated experience in litigation in a law firm and/or in-house.
  • Prior in-house experience, particularly in higher education, non-profit or governmental institutions is preferred.
  • Civil and criminal trial experience
  • Experience conducting and responding to written discovery requests and drafting legal pleadings including summary judgement and other motions.
  • Experience taking and defending depositions.
  • Deep knowledge of and familiarity with the rules of civil procedure of the State of California and the Federal Rules of Civil procedure.
  • Experience in legal research, writing, analysis and reasoning.
  • Experience conducting and directing internal investigations of alleged discrimination, harassment, retaliations, and other civil rights-related claims.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide excellent legal advice and offer proactive and creative solutions to resolve legal, procedural, or administrative issues in compliance with all applicable legal standards across broad practice areas, including student affairs, faculty affairs, employment, labor, business affairs, contracts, and policy. Perform activities related to litigation in state and federal court as well as administrative agencies, including drafting pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, and legal briefs, and representing the university at depositions, hearings, and trials. Supervise the work of outside counsel.

Conduct legal research and provide analysis, written and oral advice, and education and training as needed to keep the university and the members of the university community apprised of legal developments and current on laws and regulations affecting assigned areas.

Negotiate, draft, administer, advise on and interpret a broad variety of contracts, including licensing agreements, leases, and other legal instruments memorializing the diverse activities of a large dynamic academic organization, including review of catalogues, addenda, and handbooks. Draft, advance, and advise on policy and policy interpretation.

Participate on university and/or campus committees or working groups that support and advance the mission, goals and aspirations of the university. Provide relevant training and education.

The expected hiring range for this position is USD $170,280 to USD $221,365, based upon the position's scope and responsibilities.
