Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Director of Campus Safety, the Campus Safety Supervisor is responsible for the daily supervision and oversight of the University's Campus Safety Officers in the Department of Campus Safety. The Campus Safety Supervisor plans, organizes, coordinates, schedules, supervises, and monitors the day-to-day security and safety operations and activities and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and operating standards. The incumbent in this position functions as a working supervisor in substantially performing the regular duties of a Campus Safety Officer, along with performing supervisory duties. The incumbent supervises staff working 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and 365 days per year.


Representative Duties:
Supervises assigned subordinate officers and other staff; assigns, directs, and trains staff regarding their assignments; monitors and evaluates work performance; initiates corrective actions and/or disciplinary procedures if necessary; establishes and determines day-to-day priorities; participates in employee selection and hiring processes.
Regularly scheduled hours will include weekend and after-hour shifts.
Participates in on-call schedule rotation.
Supervises and directs department activities related to facility security, emergency response, parking and traffic control, crime prevention and fire prevention.
Administers and enforces campus traffic regulations; assists with traffic control during special events; oversees the issuance of citations, communications, and vehicle operations.
Ensures that subordinate employees receive appropriate and required training regarding campus security methods and procedures in accordance with applicable codes and laws.
Reviews, monitors and maintains the campus crime log, fire log, security logs and events.
Identifies issues and reports on security trends and problem areas; develops, recommends and implements methods of reducing violations as well as property loss/damage.
Monitors ongoing campus security issues.
Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls; responds to requests for assistance; provides initial response as needed, including first aid.
Enforces all university and civil laws pertaining to security on campus and conducts or supervises the investigation of these matters and prepares reports for possible use by law enforcement or internally by the campus administration.
Receives and investigates complaints related to security activities or personnel; investigates reports of suspicious vehicles, people or activities on campus property; detains and/or arrests persons within limits of authority; reviews, audits and approves all incident and traffic collision reports to ensure accuracy and completeness, routing to appropriate offices or agencies as needed; prepares evidentiary reports and maintains control of evidence.
Oversees and coordinates security at large campus events; manages multiple contracted security individuals during large events.
Monitors and approves employee time records; approves and processes time off and overtime claims; develops master employee schedules; ensures adequate coverage/replacements for vacationing and sick employees.
Prepares clear and concise criminal, supplemental and incident reports relating to daily activities including observed violations, interviews and collection of physical evidence; prepares memoranda, correspondence, reports and other documents.
Oversees the daily operation and programming of the campus access control and camera system, to include program and data input, audit of the system for accuracy and current users, setting up of user groups, and basic system maintenance and troubleshooting of the system; trains the campus safety officers and student workers on the use of current and future systems, to include access control, traffic control, and camera systems.
Patrols campus buildings and grounds on foot, bicycle or by vehicle as required.
Secures all buildings and structures according to need, checking for signs of vandalism, fires or other dangers which might result in loss or damage to property.
Submits work orders to respective departments for routine maintenance or repairs.
Performs after-hours lighting surveys and reports results.
Responds to and investigates instances involving assault, battery, illegal substances use and other illegal acts occurring on University property.
Responds to fire and burglar alarm activation, which may include extinguishing small fires.
Handles and operates campus safety equipment, which will include motor vehicles, radio scanners, spotlights, handcuffs, hand-held radio, and basic hand tools and may include chemical agents.
Provides information and responds to questions from students, staff, and visitors.
Provides testimony on cases in court as needed.
Provides escort services as requested.
Reports all hazards, unsafe conditions and equipment failures to the Assistant Director of Campus Safety.
Coordinates communications with University personnel and law, fire, and safety personnel to receive and exchange information related to security, vandalism, crimes, investigations, or safety issues.
Attends meetings and conferences as assigned; participates on task forces and committees as needed.
Assists in emergency situations (e.g. accidents, personal injuries, fires, earthquakes, etc.).
Conducts regular meetings with the Campus Safety staff; develops training programs and agenda; works with officers on their shifts in order to evaluate subordinate performance and to ensure best security practices are being used.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Train Campus Safety Officers in all systems and processes and to write basic user instructional procedures for these systems.
Schedule and maintain staffing requirements, including obtaining extra staff for events from local law enforcement or contract security companies.


Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: High school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience in public or private security, military security, law enforcement, or related experience with at least two years of experience in a lead or supervisory role.


Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in criminal justice, business, law enforcement, or related area


Licenses and Other Requirements:
Valid California drivers license and an acceptable, current DMV drivers record report.
First Aid and CPR certificate issued by an authorized agency within first three months of employment.
Work flexible hours & shifts as needed; must be available to work any shift as required, including alternating shifts.
Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Guard Card preferred.
Subject to driving to conduct work.

Indoor and outdoor assignments; patrol in all types of weather; occasional contact with upset individuals; variable work shifts; exposure to adverse weather conditions, and potential physical hazards involved in intervening in anti-social, illegal or violent behavior; subject to operating a vehicle to conduct work.
